This chasing hammer head is forged from two materials - the body of the hammer is wrought iron and the face is 1045 tool steel. The face has been forge welded on to the iron body of the hammer while it is still rectangular, and then the final form of the hammer is forged. Once the hammer has been refined at the bench and heat treated, the ornamentation is applied. This is done with a technique called nunome zogan. Nunome zogan is a traditional Japanese technique where a chisel is used to create a fine crosshatch pattern on the metal that is to be overlaid. Once the chiseling is finished, thin foil (in this case 24K gold) can be pushed in to the crosshatch pattern and burnished in order to adhere it to the base material.
